Banana, Cherry + Beet Baby Food Puree
WOWZERS! I do not want to brag or anything, but this might be the most beautiful puree I have ever made. I am literally all 😍😋😍😋 over here.
Not to mention, I just ate about half a bowl of this baby puree because.. well, I had to taste test it, er, right?!?! I normally taste test all of my recipes to make sure they are good enough for our babies, but I usually don’t EAT half of a bowl of a puree just because it is so damn good I can’t stop myself.
This puree is just that good!
Unstoppable eating good!
Made with bananas, cherries, and beets, it is super creamy while still being thick and fluffy. The cherries naturally sweeten it, while the beets add enough earthiness to keep it grounded and not too over-the-top sweet.
I am seriously considering putting this in the freezer and seeing if I can make banana ice cream out of it!
Have I gone too far?
Probably.
But I am going to try it out anyway
How to Make this Puree

- Steam: place the beets in a steamer basket and steam.
- Add Ingredients: add in the frozen cherries and steam for a few more minutes.

Ingredients
- 3 medium bananas
- 2/3 cup cherries fresh or frozen, pitted
- 1/4 cup red beets peeled and finely chopped
- 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, bring 2 inches of water to a boil. Place beets into a steamer basket and put over the boiling water, cover and steam for 7 minutes or until tender with a fork.
- If using frozen cherries (fresh cherries can be added during blending) add them on top of the beets, cover and steam for another 3 minutes. Let cool slightly. Reserver steamer water.
- Place the beets, cherries, bananas and lemon juice into a blender or food processor and puree for 1-2 minutes on high or until completely smooth. You may need to add in some additional reserved water to thin it out, if so start by adding in 1 tablespoon of water in at a time or until you reach your desired consistency. I did not add any additional water to my puree.

I tried this without the beets to introduce my daughter to cherries and it went over well. Next time, I plant to make it with the beets.
If using large bananas how many do I use? Still 3? Or how many cups of chopped banana would you say is in this recipe
This recipe is super forgiving, so you can use either 2 large or 3 large depending on how many you have. 🙂
This turned out very gelatinous for me and my baby doesn’t like that consistently. Any idea what I might have done incorrectly to get that texture? Or is that normal with this food? Thanks!
I haven’t had this happen before with this recipe. But I’m wondering if you needed a little more liquid to thin it out a little.
Its okay to use canned beets. I’ve never eaten beets but I would like my baby to try them. Strawberries are a good substitute to cherries?
I haven’t tried using canned beets, so I don’t know if they will work. The pre-steamed beets in the produce section will work though. Strawberries are a great substitute for cherries.
My child is allergic or at least intolerant to bananas. If she ingests them, she will have issues for a few days following. Do you have any suggestions on how to substitute the banana for the same consistency?
Thanks!
Sorry about your child’s banana intolerance. I haven’t tried these but peaches, cauliflower or mango might have a similar consistency to the banana in this recipe. Let us know what your try and how it works.
Hi Michele,
I am new to making baby food. So far I tried two of recipes. I want to try this recipe but I might not be able to find cherries because of the season. What can I substitute? Raspberries? Also, I tried to read 15 LUNCH IDEAS FOR BABY (6+ MONTHS) but the page did not lodge or there was nothing on the page. Thank you for sharing your recipes.
Raspberries are a great substitute for the cherries. Or you can use frozen cherries.
Weird the link won’t work – try this https://babyfoode.com/blog/15-lunch-purees-for-baby-2/
